The Glass

2019 | Photography | Selfportrait with Painting

In “From the Other Side of the Glass”, Suzan Noesen plays on the vulnerability of visibility in different environments and the changes in representation through different media. Originally, the painting is based on a “selfie” taken in a luxurious house. While the décor and phone can be clearly discerned, the artist vanishes within this space in white light as if overexposed on camera. Confronting the painting again in a similar space, Noesen’s face again disappears on the photograph in the fluid forms of movement that a camera cannot catch. In certain social surroundings, one vanishes from the field of representation wherever someone feels that they don’t quite belong.
