Loopzones continues my investigation into the connection between the human relationship to nature and the social relationship. Here, landscape is explored as an affective space : the social interspace in the tentative intimate encounter between two people is unfolded via cinematographic approaches in oscillation between analogue and digital technology, the spatialization of the image and haptic objects.

In the Expanded Cinema installation Loopzones, two nature spirits are trapped in attempts of reconciliation, loopzones of the same moment, a date full of insecurities. Set in a biological institute’s garden, the landscaping of natural and mental spaces is explored through elusive, image-based narrative fragments.

Loopzones is a dissection of the situation of ongoing reconciliation in an intimate relationship taking place in a worldspace with slightly parallel, futurist and morbid relations to nature: Each level of experience is represented through a different shot with a different landscape background , focussing on different expressions of vulnerability and interpretations of the same moment.

The installation recreates the feeling of the withdrawal of the sensible. The confrontation of an intense, sensory visual world with the “transparent” regulation of the exhibition space seeks to represent this inner tension between the desire for connection and protection of the personal.

In the overall view of the room, at the entrances to the room, the various projections create a moving, abstract, two-dimensional landscape image inspired by modern landscape painting. The viewers literally move through this landscape of different image spaces.

Each projection is a shot that loops into itself. Being of different length, the juxtaposition of the looping shots creates different encounters and meanings between the images.

The depicted, dissected scene examines the subtle events in the experience of the inability to relate – to one’s own emotions, to the outside world – which becomes intensely visible through the attempt at contact in an intimate relationship. The omnipresence of nature, withhold behind glasses or overly landscaped, underlines, while serving as a projection for the unconscious, the longing for sensual contact that is confronted with an unattainable, dreamlike space.
